Peri-implantitis therapy

Peri-implantitis is one of the risks involved in implantation procedures. It is a severe inflammation affecting the soft tissue around the implant which may extend to the jawbone. Untreated, it causes bone resorption and potentially loss of the implant. Peri-implantitis occurs when bacterial plaque deposited on dental prostheses is not removed regularly and causes inflammation. Factors such as smoking, diabetes, inadequate oral hygiene or insufficient healing of the dental implant in the jawbone promote peri-implantitis. The proper treatment depends on the degree of the implantation. Initial-stage peri-implantitis can be cured with a mouthwash and professional deep-cleaning of the implant. Sometimes, this treatment must be supplemented by oral antibiotics. In case of advanced peri-implantitis which already caused bone resorption, an operation is necessary in which the resulting bone pocket is filled with bone replacement material and the implant is firmly anchored in the bone again.
